Geïnspireerd door zijn liefde voor dieren, vooral pony’s, bracht Thelwell’s grillige illustraties hun lieflijke eigenaardigheden en fratsen tot leven. Naarmate zijn talent tot bloei kwam, ontwikkelde hij een kenmerkende stijl die zijn illustere carrière zou definiëren.
Thelwell’s pad leidde hem naar het lesgeven, waar hij zijn vaardigheden verfijnde terwijl hij zijn kennis deelde met aspirant-kunstenaars. Zijn ervaringen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog beïnvloedden zijn artistieke discipline en oog voor detail, wat duidelijk werd in zijn iconische illustratiestijl. Een belangrijk keerpunt kwam toen Thelwell zijn samenwerking met Punch magazine begon. Meer dan 25 jaar sierden zijn illustraties de pagina’s, waarmee hij lezers vermaakte met humoristische en herkenbare afbeeldingen van menselijk gedrag. Het was echter zijn portrettering van de Thelwell-pony’s die zijn nalatenschap verzekerde. Deze lieve maar wel ondeugende pony’s werden iconische symbolen van humor en paardenavonturen, die resoneren bij zowel paardensportliefhebbers als een breder publiek.
Eerbetoon aan Norman Thelwell’s creatieve nalatenschap
Twee jaar geleden kreeg Elsbeth Bos van De Hollandsche Manege in Amsterdam de kans om het werk van Thelwell naar Nederland te halen. Met de wens om het Levend Paardenmuseum, dat deel uitmaakt van de manege, tijdens de feestelijke decemberperiode op een betoverende en passende manier in te richten, ging Elsbeth op zoek naar een uniek evenement. Dit resulteerde in Thelwell’s Pony Parade. Met de aanwezigheid van de vertederende Thelwell-pony’s in het museum tijdens Kerstmis, hoopt Elsbeth niet alleen magie en nostalgie te brengen, maar wil ze ook de liefde voor Thelwell doorgeven aan de volgende generatie pony- en paardenliefhebbers.
We zijn dankbaar voor de betrokkenheid van paardenkunstcurator Joyce Ter Horst (Paard Verzameld) en Norman Thelwell’s zoon, David. Hun expertise en kennis hebben de tentoonstelling verdiept en authentiek gemaakt, waardoor het een eerbetoon is aan Norman Thelwell en zijn creatieve nalatenschap.

Thelwell’s path led him to teaching, where he honed his skills while sharing his knowledge with aspiring artists. His experiences during World War II influenced his artistic discipline and attention to detail, which became evident in his iconic illustrative style. A significant turning point came when Thelwell began his collaboration with Punch magazine. Over 25 years, his illustrations graced the pages, delighting readers with their humorous and relatable depictions of human behavior. However, it was his portrayal of the Thelwell ponies that secured his legacy. These lovable and sometimes naughty ponies became iconic symbols of humor and equestrian adventures, resonating with both equestrian enthusiasts and a broader audience.
Honoring Norman Thelwell’s creative legacy
Two years ago, Elsbeth Bos from De Hollandsche Manege in Amsterdam had the opportunity to bring Thelwell’s work to the Netherlands. With the desire to create a captivating and fitting setting for the Living Horse Museum, which is a part of the manege, during the festive December period, Elsbeth set out to find a unique event. This resulted in Thelwell’s Pony Parade. With the presence of the endearing Thelwell ponies in the museum during Christmas, Elsbeth hopes to not only bring magic and nostalgia but also to pass on the love for Thelwell to the next generation of pony and horse enthusiasts.
We are grateful for the involvement of equine art curator Joyce Ter Horst (Paard Verzameld) and Norman Thelwell’s son, David. Their expertise and knowledge have deepened and authentically enriched the exhibition, making it a tribute to Norman Thelwell and his creative legacy.
